Since the Vietnam War was ended in 1975 hundreds of thousands of Laotians have fled the country fearing of persecution. Many thousands have died during this exodus because of the mass killing by the Lao People Democratic Republic soldiers. Many thousands who were arrested were torture and killed in concentration camps. Family members who manage to escape witnessed torture, hardship, hunger, fear, and sorrow.
Many hundreds of thousands manage to escape and resettle in many countries around the world. Thousands who could not make it died during the escaping in Mekong River. Many thousands of women and children became widowed and orphans because their husband and father was killed and torture in concentration camp. They were not lucky enough to make it to the third country but settle in villages along the borders of Thailand, Cambodia, and Burma trying to survive. Most of them became traumatized psychologically be war and economic hardship fearing if return to Laos will be dislocated and persecuted. Little assistance is getting to them.
